The Velite 5, Buick’s first extended-range electric vehicle, made its global debut in Shanghai today. Top: Buick Velite 5. The system has a double high-performance, permanent-magnet electric motor drive unit. The Velite 5 offers up to 768 kilometers (477 miles) of range in extended-range mode.

Fletcher is responsible for the Extended Range Electric Vehicle propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt as well as the propulsion systems in GM’s upcoming line-up of Plug-In Hybrid Elecrtic Vehicles. As she outlined it: eAssist provides a average 25% fuel economy improvement over a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle.

The 8 kWh battery pack for the new 2011 Buick PHEV crossover vehicle is prepared for testing at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011.
