Volvo has some of the most aggressive goals when it comes to brand-wide electrification, and the new C40 Recharge is a big step in its electric charge towards zero emissions. Its official name is the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, and it’s available as either a single motor or dual motor (the latter is called the Twin).

We’ll limit our top five to under $100,000 – no small sum, but these days families have had to make peace with combustion SUVs, dual-cab utes and people movers costing $60,000 and upwards. Its 66.5kWh battery is good for 371km range. Budget is, of course, a huge factor. We’ve deliberately prioritised cheaper grades.

The plug-in hybrid version of its new Tonale small SUV has gone on sale in Australia, priced from a chunky $77,500 before on-roads for the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV. The price puts the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV Q4 in line with full electric small SUV rivals such as the Volvo XC40 Pure Electric ($73,990) or Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 ($81,700).
