The Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced the approval—ahead of schedule under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program ( earlier post )—of 35 Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Deployment Plans from States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Total US sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric—have increased in recent years, but still represent only about 0.7% Several states offer tax incentives to reduce the upfront cost of PEVs to consumers. The ratepayer must also install a separate meter dedicated to the PEV.

A new report from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) reviews the major advantages and disadvantages associated with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs). For FCVs, Schoettle and Sivak note, the effective cost per mile is currently $0.09. per gallon, results in a cost of $0.10
