kWh lithium-ion battery—integrated in the front section of the XL1—supplies the electric motor with 220 volts of electrical energy. The battery comprises 60 25Ah cells, with a carbon-fiber case. The XL1’s 12-volt electrical system is supplied via a DC/DC converter and a small auxiliary battery.

Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. Previous consumer tests with electric cars – in America and in France – haveshown that drivers’ main concern is being stranded with flat batteries. Witha 60-mile range, most felt the need to recharge after 30 miles or so. How far hybrids will be encouraged in the new government initiative remains tobe seen.
