At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volvo Car Corporation will unveil the Volvo XC60 gasoline-electric Plug-in Hybrid Concept. To make the plug-in technology viable for buyers in the US and China, Volvo notes , it needs to feature a gasoline engine. It also charges the battery during braking.

Detroit-based NextEnergy is a non-profit energy-technology and business accelerator. The battery-powered minivans are connected to a charging module that, using NextEnergy technology, can simulate any electrical grid in the world. Each is powered by a 24 kWh battery modified to accommodate bidirectional charging.

The announcement builds on GM’s initial commitment announced in March 2020 to invest $20 billion from 2020 through 2025, including capital, engineering expenses and other development costs, to accelerate its transition to EVs and AVs. In November 2020, the company increased its planned investment over the same period to $27 billion.

Global automotive supplier Linamar Corporation has developed a fully-integrated, compact, modular and scalable twin-motor bolt-on rear axle unit to enable hybrid all-wheel drive applications: the Agilit-e Hybrid Power Unit.
