European Parliament calls for fast action to cut non-CO2 climate forcers

The European Parliament is calling for fast action to reduce non-CO 2 climate forcers including black carbon soot, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), methane, and ground-level ozone, which together are responsible for nearly half of climate forcing. Even cutting CO 2 emissions to zero today will not produce cooling for a thousand years.

Among the non-CO 2 pollutants are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), methane, tropospheric ozone, and black carbon soot. Ramanathan and Victor highlight the importance of aggressively reducing CO 2 emissions, but note that the road ahead will be long, difficult, and expensive, and that “in the meantime, a fast-action plan is needed.”
