The GM designed oil-cooled, permanent magnet motor is the heart of the Spark EV’s propulsion system.

By comparison, the Nissan LEAF carries a 99 MPGe (combined) EPA rating, while the smaller i-MiEV carries a 112 MPGe (combined) rating. North American spec i-MiEV. Mitsubishi is positioning the North American i-MiEV electric vehicle as the most affordably-priced mass-produced EV available in the US. A redesigned center console featuring improved materials will also feature prominently on the new North American Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

To achieve its goals, Peugeot is relying on a new products strategy that includes electric propulsion (the i0n i-MiEV-derived electric car) and E-Vivacity scooter from 2010; diesel hybrid in the 3008 from 2011 ( earlier post) ; e-HDi (microhybrid) from 2011 on the entire diesel range; and a plug-in diesel hybrid in 2012.

The smaller Mitsubishi i-MiEV is rated at 112 MPGe combined, with consumption of 30 kWh/100 miles. Faster charging with 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops—up to 20 miles per charge hour. By the end of 2012, Focus Electric will be available in 19 markets across the US.

In addition to a recent electric car deal with NISSAN Motors ( NSANY ), Portland General Electric, the Oregon state governor and GE have also announced a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors ( MMTOF.PK ) to develop and sell the Miev electric car with 85 mile range by 2011. Tax credit incentives are also available to consumers in the U.S.
