European researchers have launched a new project to obtain a gasoline engine at least 20% more efficient than current engines and adapted for future electrified powertrains. At the present time the maximum efficiency of gasoline engines is around 40%.

The Renault gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid system supports 60 km of electric range plus extended range due to the gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. The chief feature of the concept lies in the clutch casing which houses a permanent magnet electric motor (axial flux discoid motor in the case of the prototype).
