Johnson Controls is expanding its manufacturing operations in China by beginning production of advanced lead-acid batteries for Start-Stop vehicles to help automakers meet increasingly strict fuel economy and emission regulations. The global Start-Stop market for new vehicles could reach 49 million annually by 2020.

Johnson Controls will provide its Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) advanced lead-acid battery technology to power the Chery Jaguar Land Rover Start-Stop and other vehicles made in China to serve the China market. The battery restarts the engine when the driver’s foot releases the brake pedal or engages the clutch.

Toshiba Corporation expanded its SCiB product offering with the launch of a 20Ah-HP rechargeable lithium-ion battery cell that delivers high energy and high power at the same time. In an EV, for example, a high-energy battery allows the vehicle to drive further on a single charge—but it lowers power input and output and extends charge times.

The earliest electric car batteries were disposable and were disposed of when they ran out of power, so there was no concept of recharging them.
