Ford will also jointly market GE’s alternative fuel infrastructure solutions: GE’s WattStation EV charging station and CNG in a Box natural gas fueling station with its commercial buyers.
Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have developed a Smart Charger Controller for plug-in vehicles that will automaticallyrecharge vehicles during times of least cost to the consumer and lower demand for power. Widespread use of these devices could help advance a smart power grid.
With this tandem, the RT becomes a fully integrated power plant that is able to automaticallyrecharge its batteries when more energy is consumed than they store. With a full charging capacity of 150 kW, just a quarter of an hour is sufficient to raise the charge level of both high-voltage batteries (100 kWh) from 50% to 80%.
Flexibility: the high-voltage battery can be recharged from conventional domestic power sockets, the BMW i Wallbox or at public charging stations. The power electronics, including the charging generator, can be found next to the electric motor above the rear axle. Accelerator kickdown brings the combustion engine into play.
Charged through a brake energy regeneration system, the batteries allow the motor to provide an additional 95 PS (94 hp, 70 kW) and 173-lb ft (235 N·m). The battery pack is predominantly charged through a rear axle electro-hydraulic brake energy regeneration system.
