Dealers think the Biden administration’s EV policies are forcing the auto industry to move ahead of market demand, according to a new Automotive News survey. Surprisingly, 57% of respondents thought that the new point-of-sale rebate for the federal EV tax credit would have no effect on EV sales, or they were unsure.

Many in the auto industry are warning that realistic BEV range numbers under varying conditions need to be widely published , else risk creating a backlash against EVs in general. Range risk concerns obviously are tightly coupled to EV charging availability.

In the past the auto industry has responded to incentives and guidelines set by government agencies and reengineered their product to meet this requirement. This does not mean that you will not be able to buy that Cadillac or Corvette you have been admiring. It is only a matter of economics motivated by incentives or taxes.

GM says it is already looking ahead to the next generation of Volt-based vehicles — it unveiled the Cadillac Converj concept in January — and says costs will come down as the technology spreads to more models. Engineering proptypes enjoy a tax break. We are addicted to the gasoline tax both at the State and Federal level.
