Under its newly-unveiled Genesis 2015 plan, the University of South Carolina will reduce CO 2 emissions from its fleet of vehicles by 90% within five years. The university has about 400 vehicles that are used for business, maintenance and transportation of students, said Derrick Huggins, associate vice president for transportation.

Local governments, public universities and colleges, and state agencies can apply for EV grants through MassEVIP. Grant range from $750 to $7,500 for purchased EVs and zero-emission motorcycles and $3,000 to $5,000 for leased EVs. Eligible applicants can receive funding for up to 25 vehicles.

Despite focusing on clean-diesel technologies, VW has not been immune to alternative fuels. It has also launched flexible fuel vehicles in Brazil. The 2009 clean-diesel Jetta TDI for example, has scooped numerous ‘Green Car of the Year’ titles and reduces emissions by 90 per cent.
