UPS announced an update to 125 Workhorse E-GEN series hybrid electric delivery trucks that improve fuel economy as part of the company’s broader Rolling Laboratory approach. The smaller engine will improve fuel economy, however. The small ICE could be outfitted for gasoline, propane, or CNG.

A comparable SUV, such as a 2023 Ford Explorer AWD with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an EPA highway rating of 26 miles per gallon, would have used 69 gallons of gasoline. The fuel costs we saw posted during our trip averaged $4 per gallon for 87 octane, which would be $276 gasoline costs, so advantage electric, but not by much.

For example, running the air-conditioning or operating in very low temps has a similar impact on ICE vehicles: The US Department of Energy (DOE) claims that at 20 degrees Fahrenheit, ICE vehicles can lose up to 24% of fuel economy on short trips.
