The HyBoost project ( earlier post ), a two-year collaborative research program led by Ricardo in partnership with Controlled Power Technologies, the European Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium, Ford, Imperial College London, and Valeo, aims to demonstrate a very cost-effective, ultra-efficient gasoline engine in a C-segment passenger car.

A new project has set the ambitious goal of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30-40 per cent. The research is being led by Ricardo, with partners including Controlled Power Technologies, Ford, Imperial College London, Valeo and the European Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium.

A collaboration between the UK’s leading automotive engineering facilities has resulted in the development of the first plug-in retro-fit hybrid conversion of a combustion engine vehicle. This transformed the van into a hybrid vehicle, capable of achieving an all electric range of over 20 km, from one charge.

But the tests are too costly for the typical small startup to afford and the warranties are unattainable because the electric batteries currently used to power plug-ins don’t last ten years. CO2 from cars does not contribute to smog and is not harmful to human health but it is one of the leading contributors to global warming.

Posted by: Green Chambers | Apr 14, 2009 12:25:03 AM Battery tech is still not advanced or reliable enough for an affordable pure EV, hydrogen fuel cells like in the FCX Clarity may be the clean future, but there are too many technical and infrastructure hurdles to overcome.
