At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) next week, China-based GAC Motor will unveil three new vehicles: a new SUV, a hybrid crossover concept car, and an elecric vehicle developed internally. GAC is the only Chinese automaker to exhibit at the 2017 NAIAS and is also the first Chinese automaker to present on the main show floor.

The Mondeo Energi, to be launched in early 2018, will be the first plug-in hybrid to be manufactured by the Changan Ford JV. Ford also confirmed plans to bring an all-new fully electric small SUV to China within five years; the electric SUV will feature a range of up to 450 km (279 miles) and will also be marketed in North America and Europe.

The Chinese government plans to have new-energy vehicles account for more than 20% of the country’s annual car sales by 2025—equating to more than seven million vehicles, based on Chinese government forecasts. The event marks the first time the company displays only plug-in hybrid vehicles at an auto show.

The future product portfolio will focus on three categories: Top End Luxury, Core Luxury and Entry Luxury as outlined in the company’s Economics of Desire event on May 19. The EQB compact SUV was launched at the Mercedes-Benz Kecskemét plant in 2021 and is the first purely electrically powered series production vehicle from Hungary.
