UPS announced an update to 125 Workhorse E-GEN series hybrid electric delivery trucks that improve fuel economy as part of the company’s broader Rolling Laboratory approach. 4-cylinder engine; charging capability remains the same, as does the electric range. The small ICE could be outfitted for gasoline, propane, or CNG.

The 1966 GM Electrovan didn’t leave much room for passengers or cargo (image from autonews.com). Research on hydrogen vehicles dipped until the 1990s when European countries announced plans for more hydrogen-centered car power, such as the 2005-07 bi-fuel BMW 7-Series with a V12 engine that ran on either compressed hydrogen or gasoline.

The concept for an all-EV reboot of the classic Type 2 Microbus appeared in 2016 and was confirmed for production in August 2017. That puts it squarely into the nascent segment of mass-market 3-row electric family utilities.
