The New York Police Department (NYPD) has deployed 40 Nissan Altima Hybrids as the first alternative fuel vehicles to be used as marked and unmarked patrol cars in the Police Department’s fleet. At 35 miles per gallon for city driving, the hybrid Altima gets double the gas mileage of the Impala, which gets only 16 miles per gallon.

High-pressure, lightweight aluminum casting technology—including the front and rear suspension cross-members in the Dodge Dart—further reduce weight.

The more powerful Hybrid Max, only available in the Platinum model and the one Clean Fleet Report drove, is a 2.4-liter liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with dual electric motors putting out 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Both engines run on 87 octane, but don’t plug in for electricity.
