Roskill: graphite prices could push higher on tightening markets for batteries & electrodes

The tight supply/demand situation for graphite electrodes is expected to persist for much longer than many market observers expect. Roskill forecasts that global sales of EVs and hybrid vehicles will increase rapidly in the coming years and could account for 69% of all motor vehicle sales by 2027.

Underpinned by the huge demand for cobalt feedstocks from the battery sector versus relatively tight supply, the cobalt metal price climbed from below US$15/lb in 2016 to a ten-year high of US$43/lb in Q2 2018. Meanwhile, said Roskill, the supply side has been so far more severely impacted by the pandemic.
