Renault’s ongoing downsizing strategy is aimed at reducing the cubic capacity of its engines in order to bring down fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions, without detracting from performance. The fundamental challenge is to convert as much of the chemical energy in the fuel, into mechanical energy, as efficiently as possible at the prescribed flow rate. The rest of the energy is recovered by the MGU-H (for ‘Heat’); an electrical machine connected to the turbocharger. Conversion efficiency is now the key.
