Now that the 2011 Nissan Leaf and 2011 Chevy Volt have reached showrooms--a handful of them, anyhow--a new crop of electric vehicles will launch into the market for 2011. One of those may be the e6 all-electric crossover built by Chinese manufacturer BYD.

Bob Lutz, the outgoing vice chairman of GM, has said the company will produce about 8,000 Chevy Volts in 2011. Still, Chinese auto-makers hesitate to mass-market their electric models domestically. Chinese green-car subsidies on hold. Total cars initially available: 4,700. Other automakers are also proceeding cautiously.

Chinese automaker BYD has announced that it will reveal its plans for US-ready electric drive vehicles and clean energy products at the upcoming 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

It is also working on production of the Model S saloon car, which is planned for release in 2011 and has already received 1,500 pre-orders. In December last year, BYD began selling the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the F3DM, which is slated to go on sale in Europe in 2010 with a 62mile all-electric range.

Volt, when it launched F3DM, a plug-in hybrid, in China late last year. The company has said earlier the hybrid car is scheduled to go on sale in the United States and Europe in 2011. It plans to begin delivering on the E6, a pure electric car, later this year. BYD Auto beat other products, such as General Motors?

Plug-ins are slated to hit the Chinese market in earnest over the next few years. BYD’s plug-in hybrid F3DM went on sale (for fleet operators) late last year, and it’s supposed to launch its first all-electric model — the E6 — in the second half of 2009. and EU buyers.
