The undeveloped Kirby oil sands leases are in the south east of the Athabasca region of Alberta, close to the Devon-operated Jackfish development, which started production in 2007. Devon Energy Corporation is an Oklahoma City-based independent energy company engaged in oil and gas exploration and production.

The GridWise smart-grid trial in the Seattle area in 2007 found that consumers lowered their energy use by 10 percent and utilities were able to shave their peak demand by 15 percent. By the way Boones plan covers: Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. He states this as a positive of his program.
