SOFeX was meant to test the Iron Hypothesis in waters between New Zealand and Antarctica during the Antarctic summer. In 2007 Bishop and Lam published measurements from shipboard instruments deployed during SOFeX which suggested that the picture of plankton blooms sending carbon to the deep ocean wasn’t so simple after all.
