MARCH 31, 2015
The overall study area covered East-Southeast Asia and included 17 countries: China (including Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR); Taiwan; Japan; Mongolia; North Korea; South Korea; Brunei Darussalam; Cambodia; Indonesia; Laos; Malaysia; Myanmar; Philippines; Singapore; Thailand; Timor-Leste; Vietnam. By explicitly measuring the urban density (persons per kilometer) change for each agglomeration, the researchers showed that, contrary to previous findings, urban growth has outpaced land expansion.
