Using the PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to Transition Society Seamlessly and Profitably From Fossil Fuel to 100% Renewable Energy

Green Car Congress

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) The PHEV does not require the heavy, costly batteries required by other electric cars, nor does it suffer from a limited range or poor freeway performance. Engineering Advantages of PHEV.

Currently, SCE customers lease or own more than 12,000 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), both battery electric (BEVs, for about 35%) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs, for about 65%)—about 10% of national EV sales. Because “early adopters” tend to cluster in the same neighborhoods and adding a plug-in vehicle is like adding another house to the circuit, in terms of load, SCE developed an operational strategy to upgrade distribution circuits.

billion in federal funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) in support of the development of advanced electric drive vehicles (EDVs) including plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV), electric vehicles (EV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCV). For purposes of production volume estimation each PHEV battery must be capable of delivering at least 5 kWh of available energy (total production of 100,000 to 500,000 kWh).

Revenge of the Electric Car

Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. PHEV. It is different from a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, which runs on both battery power and gasoline. NEV stands for neighborhood electric vehicle, which can travel at a top speed of 25 mph. Infrastructure, recharging and business models. Berkeley will have a higher percentage than Fresno—it will not be unlikely for 3-5 PEVs to show up on one neighborhood circuit in Berkeley, overwhelming the local circuit, and leading to blackouts, he said. The next step will be the ability to communicate with individual cars—that could address the 3 cars on the same neighborhood circuit issue.
