After joining MIT as a professor in 1960, he moved up the ranks and served as associate head of the electrical engineering and computer science department from 1974 to 1978. He also established MIT's master's degree in engineering.

He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1949 from Johns Hopkins University , in Baltimore, and earned a Ph.D. He joined the University of Illinois in 1977 as a professor.
