While it’s not as legendary of a nameplate as other icons of motoring, the Pathfinder was once a rugged body-on-frame SUV that could go just about anywhere, it’s now a minivan without the utility of a minivan. Ranking (and rankling) in this vein was any Mazda with that brand’s infuriating infotainment. All are 2023s or 2024s.

However, standard hybrids actually outperformed every other group with 26 percent fewer problems than vehicles wholly reliant on gasoline. But it also left your author wondering why standard hybrids weren’t seeing the same number of problems. SUVs, crossovers, and minivans were next.

Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. There are 15 MY 2013 pickup and minivan/van models for which at least one variant of the model has a combined city/highway label fuel economy rating of 20 mpg (11.8 mpg, or 22%.

The Trends report has been published annually since 1975 and covers all passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans, and all but the largest pickup trucks and vans. Car SUVs (SUVs that must meet car GHG and fuel economy standards) and truck SUVs had the highest annual improvement from MY 2012 to MY 2013 of 1.1 mpg, respectively.
