The announcement comes four weeks after Tesla Motors announced its own entry into the ESS market with the home PowerWall Li-ion battery system ( earlier post ), although Daimler has been considering the move for several years. Deutsche ACCUmotive has delivered more than 60,000 lithium-ion batteries to date.

Under the MOU, the two companies will collaborate on research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cell technologies. The engines will be installed in certain Toyota-produced vehicles planned for sale in the European market. Costs of light-duty plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are high—largely due to their lithium-ion batteries—and unlikely to drastically decrease in the near future, according to a new report from the National Research Council (NRC).
