Alfa promises up to 30 miles of electric-only range. Even on slow charging, you'd be able to juice up overnight. Like with other Stellantis PHEVs, there's an eSave mode to help better manage battery usage. Unlike the Hornet, the Tonale is available only as a plug-in hybrid, using the same powertrain as the Dodge Hornet R/T.

I got to see this a lot, since during our test week I took two 170-mile round trips to visit my family (in my COVID-19 bubble). kWh battery, tucked away under the car along the center tunnel, provides just 18 miles of all-electric motoring. I averaged 25 mpg over 364 miles of mostly freeway driving. Moving towards more juice.

In other words, if for some reason the idea of a PHEV Wrangler bothers you, relax. Now you can run it solely on electric power for up to 21 miles and plug it in to charge. The question I kept asking myself during my loan is this: Does going PHEV make the Wrangler Rubicon better? Yes, you get a plug-in hybrid setup.

Automakers continue to only offer sub-100 mile range vehicles. Workplace charging certainly isn’t a concern of Tesla S owners, but it should become the focus for getting drivers into EVs and PHEVs. Even with Level 1 charging at work, these become 100+ mile cars. Neither scenario encourages co-workers to buy PEVs.
