Automakers continue to only offer sub-100 mile range vehicles. Workplace charging certainly isn’t a concern of Tesla S owners, but it should become the focus for getting drivers into EVs and PHEVs. Even with Level 1 charging at work, these become 100+ mile cars. Level 2 is perfect for the home.

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. It was all-new for the 2018 model year, and was engineered from the start to accommodate 2021’s PHEV version.

When the all-electric Kia Niro was introduced in 2019 it followed the 2017 Niro hybrid and then the 2018 Niro plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The Niro EV has an EPA estimated driving range of 239 miles, but in our real-world driving delivered 273 miles. Juicing up. Battery – 10 years/100,000 miles.

Nissan is working on an electric car that it says is on track to have a 100-mile range and 26-minute charge time. For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. My parents live about 180 miles away, which is well outside the range of most electric cars.

BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. I dont like the idea of leasing a battery pack, or project Better Places pay for however-so-many miles on a plan and whatnot. Install 3 miles of charging lane with about the same frequency as Rest Stops. not an issue.
