There are at least a half dozen different technologies to power cars with electricity under construction. Better Place is building stations in San Francisco, Hawaii, Israel, and Denmark to swap out 1,000 pound batteries in a car wash type set up. The first law of technology: "Never buy anything with a low serial number."

Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars. The new Lithium Ion batteries are expected to last the life of the car (depending on how they are used), are easily recycled and do not contain the heavy metals of previous technologies.
