The 1987 Sprint ER came in second place, due to its insatiable thirst for go-go juice on the highway (51 miles per gallon). Driving a Sprint ER from Los Angeles to New York with three passengers sounds like a nightmare. The Sprint ER shouldn't be compared to modern hybrids or EVs, though. Just $66 with gas priced at $1.16

When GM installed chargers for the EV1 they used a 50amp 220V circuit that could pump over 6KW into the batteries. I like to use the example of someone driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Some industrial sites are even set up with 440V 3 phase service. I have never been a big fan of battery swapping.

Last week, at the Model S unveiling in Los Angeles, Tesla revealed that an optional “ QuickCharg e &# battery would get a full charge in 45 minutes from a 480V outlet. For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. It isa fundamental change in direction for GM. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. GM is developing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Thats short-sighted.
