After a federal tax credit and state rebate, the price of these cars will come out at around a cool 20k. Others include the Fisker Karma, the Aptera 2e, the Coda sedan, Chevy’s Volt and Tesla’s Model S. The Leaf’s suggested retail price of $32,780 drops to $25,280 after a $7,500 federal income tax credit.

Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. What the Volt has that electric cars lack is the ability to extend its range by means of burning gasoline, the most popular fuel among cars in the US.
