Bloom Energy announced an agreement with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to test the use of nuclear energy to produce clean hydrogen through Bloom Energy’s solid-oxide, high-temperature electrolyzer. First announced in July 2020, Bloom Energy’s electrolyzer converts water (or steam) into hydrogen and oxygen.

General Atomics (GA) is developing a small modular reactor (SMR) and has recently submitted a proposal to the DOE SMR initiative to help bring the reactor to market. Only unusable fission products would be removed and stored. In an EM 2 fuel cycle, this material can satisfy US energy demands for centuries, GA says.
