At the recent SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit, General Motors engineers presented the first front-wheel-drive (FWD) iteration of their two-mode hybrid transaxle, termed the 2MT70 ( earlier post ), scheduled for its first application in the Saturn 2009 VUE 2-Mode Hybrid light sport-utility vehicle later this year ( earlier post ).

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM will announce final fuel economy estimates, as well as additional vehicle details such as name and pricing, later. V-6 flex-fuel engine.

GM got serious about its hybrid game for the 2007 model year, when the Saturn Vue Green Line hit showrooms. Fuel economy for this car was rated at 26 mpg city, 34 highway ; the Ecotec-only version with 6-speed automatic (there was also an available 4-speed automatic) got 22 mpg city, 33 highway.

Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. The comparison keeps being raised, though studies are conclusive: The "well-to-wheel" emissions of electric vehicles are lower than those from gasoline internal combustion vehicles.

General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10. Aims to get Saturn Vue on road in 2010; no production goal. Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen. Plans "large demonstration fleet" late 2009.
