Ford has begun production of the Deutsche Post StreetScooter WORK XL electric van at its European HQ in Cologne, Germany. Around 180 Ford employees are working in two shifts to build up to 16 WORK XL models per day, providing an annual production capacity of 3,500 units.

Ford Motor Company and Azure Dynamics Corporation have signed a collaborative agreement to begin delivering a pure battery electric version of the Ford Transit Connect van to customers in Europe beginning in late summer 2011. Repair works under the Ford warranty will be provided by Ford dealers.

The actions—along with a previously announced initiative to reduce approximately 500 salaried and agency positions across Europe, with the Ford salaried reductions achieved voluntarily—affect 6,200 positions or about 13% of Ford’s European workforce. Ford plans to close the two facilities in the UK in 2013.

Mr. Thesen said that a factory in Turkey was being refurbished to be able to produce 100,000 electric vehicles a year. But after interviewing Ford’s Nancy Gioia at the recent Detroit Auto show, I’m now unsure of both the timescales involved, or how much the power and auto companies are behind it as a fundamental concept.
