The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The plug-in version will only be available for fleet service and will not be sold at retail to the general public. The Federal Government now requires a fleet average of 35.5mpg by the 2016 model year - this is an increase from today’s average of 25.3mpg. The manufacturer has already added full hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan to its existing Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids.

As I read in the San Jose Mercury News about California's flex-fuel fleet fiasco. Scientific analysis over the years, whether by government or enviro organizations, has always shown that nothing can reduce petroleum usage or toxic emissions as much as a switch to grid electricity into battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
