As part of the FY 2012 Phase I Release 3 SBIR/STTR Award program, the US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Michigan-based XG Sciences, a manufacturer of graphene nanoplatelets ( earlier post ), a contract to develop low-cost, high-energy Si/graphene anodes for Li-ion batteries for use in extended range electric vehicle applications.

Students were encouraged to explore a variety of solutions including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, electric, and extended range electric vehicles. Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV). Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). All of the designs use lithium-ion battery technology.

The REEV or PHEV also may present opportunities for more novel power sources such as turbines (Wrightspeed), fuel cell stacks (Nissan) or aluminum-air batteries (Phinergy and Arconic), speakers suggested. If PHEVs are going to play a big role, what is the fuel source for that? There is a very strong case to be made for that PHEV world.
