And then, with transmission complete and the triggering stimulus gone, the system would shut down and return to a sleep or fully powered-off state. The sensor equivalent of a sleeping dog is called an event-driven sensor. The main reason is access to power.

We noted in December that the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, was working to update standards for the interface between plug-in electric cars and the grid, and planned to agree on a set within months. And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.
