Johansson outlined that after substantial growth in recent years thanks to both organic growth and through acquisitions, the company is now ready to become globally competitive. He also noted a slight upturn in certain countries including China, Japan and India, thanks to Government stimulus packages.

On 18 March, Marketwatch reported that Valero purchased selected assets of corn ethanol suppliers for $477 million.
