The BYD e6 electric vehicle ( earlier post ) will now be available for consumer purchases in China; previously, the e6 was only available for fleet purchases. BYD e6s have been in operation in government and taxi fleets for nearly 18 months. million fleet miles (or 6 million km).

plans to start test-marketing the e6 battery-electric vehicle ( earlier post ) in the US next year after almost a year’s delay, and is in talks with officials in Los Angeles to supply e-buses that could eventually lead to a manufacturing plant in the city. The City of Bogota, Colombia, has launched a pilot project to spur the use of electric vehicles in Bogota’s center-city taxi fleet. The first taxis are expected to be operational in the city in the next few months. On 29 December 2011, the City of Bogota enacted Decree No. 677 to support the project over a three-year period.

and its wholly owned subsidiary SMRT International Pte Ltd, a multi-modal transport service provider in Singapore, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BYD Company Limited to enter into discussions regarding the possibility of establishing a joint venture to distribute BYD’s eBUSes and e6 Taxis in Singapore.

In 2008 the company released a test fleet of 450 Mini-E vehicles and is getting ready to announce its second phase. In March, BYD chief executive officer Wang Chuanfu announced that in the first half of 2010 the company will sell only 100 e6 cars, to a taxi company in Shenzhen. The third phase will be released around 2015.

Last week the company announced that it would bring its five-seat E6 electric car in small numbers to the US next year. Beyond manufacturing, subsidies of 50,000 yuan were offered to taxi fleets and local government agencies in 13 cities for each hybrid or electric vehicle they purchased, while research subsidies were also increased.
