The project will test the reliability of TheWheel, the e-Traction system and Valence Li-ion batteries in extreme cold conditions; thermal functioning of the e-Traction system at cold conditions; and fuel consumption.

The pneumatic hybrid engine, which follows the downsizing and supercharging paradigm, offers a fuel-saving potential that is almost equal to that of hybrid electric powertrains while inducing much lower additional mass and cost penalties, according to the ETH Zürich researchers. If fuel is also injected, the engine responds quickly.

Researchers in an unrelated study of direct injection natural gasoline engines (dual-fuel combustion in CI-engines using RCCI as well as conventional duel-fuel combustion) at Chalmers University (Sweden) noted that methane’s very high octane number allows the use of high compression ratios in spark ignition engines.

Fuel consumption values of the EA211 engines were reduced by 8 to 10%, in part due to reduced internal friction, lower weight and optimized thermal management; in conjunction with the new ACT cylinder deactivation system, the savings potential can be as much as 20%. The engines, with a 10.5:1 liter versions at a low 1,400 rpm.
