In an event combining a first-customer ceremony and a media drive, Tustin (California) Hyundai’s Dealer Principal, John Patterson, handed over the keys to Hyundai’s first mass-produced Tucson Fuel Cell crossover ( earlier post ) to Timothy Bush, the first Hyundai Fuel Cell customer, with Hyundai executives in attendance.

Rising fuel-economy standards during the 2020s will do the same. Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. It is rare when we post a review of a car that is only available in one of the 50 United States, but such is the case with the 2022 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), which is only sold in California. It is all about the hydrogen fueling station network, which is slowly being built out.

Honda will further develop its fuel cell vehicle dealer network as the network of public hydrogen fueling stations expands across the state. The Clarity Fuel Cell is available for the competitive introductory lease price of $369 a month for 36 months with $2,868 due at signing.

Californians purchasing a new Civic Natural Gas vehicle are now eligible for an immediate California Energy Commission $1,000 purchase credit supplied directly by certified Honda Civic Natural Gas dealers at the time of purchase. Per California’s AB 266, the expiration date for the white stickers has been extended to 1 January 2019.

We refueled with CNG twice; once locally (with a partial fill, more on this below), and once off the I-5 on the way up to Los Angeles. As with any alternative fuel, be it CNG, LPG, electricity, hydrogen or E85, one of the challenges facing its adoption is both the availability of the fuel as well as the mechanics of refueling.
