The California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) will lead a joint research study of how the useful lifespan of electric vehicle batteries could be extended by repurposing them as household electric storage devices with a $992,000 grant from the University of California. The main potential applications are in electricity storage, transport and the recovery of waste heat. Heat hybrid. The costs of pre-clearance should be grant funded. The expansion of the liquid air when heat is reintroduced can be used to drive a piston engine or turbine to do useful work.

Grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 will be available toordinary motorists to encourage them to buy electric or otherultra-low-carbon cars. The grants will not be available until 2011 and the detail of how they will beallocated and which cars will qualify has still to be worked out. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.
