The driving range in pure electric mode is short, so best save that battery juice for parking garages or sneaking in late at night. Because of this we don’t address issues such as long-term reliability or total cost of ownership. The steering is responsive with a stable and controlled ride that absorbed most freeway bumps and dips.

I got to see this a lot, since during our test week I took two 170-mile round trips to visit my family (in my COVID-19 bubble). kWh battery, tucked away under the car along the center tunnel, provides just 18 miles of all-electric motoring. I averaged 25 mpg over 364 miles of mostly freeway driving. Moving towards more juice.

Nowadays, most new EVs offer a ‘real world’ range of more than 150 miles from a single charge. Some electric cars, like the Tesla Model S Long Range , are capable of covering more than 400 miles without needing to top up. It was only around 15 years ago that EVs could barely travel 50 miles before running out of juice.

Nissan is working on an electric car that it says is on track to have a 100-mile range and 26-minute charge time. For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. My parents live about 180 miles away, which is well outside the range of most electric cars.

A couple of drawbacks to consider might be the capitalization costs of building these stations and the batteries that they would have to have in stock. BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. You could sit in your vehicle while the operation takes place.
