Inventor of AT&T’s Datakit, the First Virtual Connection Switch, Dies at 85

AT&T named him chief scientist, and in that position he worked on developing architecture and protocols for a large-scale Internet so that customers could connect to it from their homes. He was granted 107 patents in Korea and 46 U.S. In 1965 he went to work for consulting firm Acres International in Montreal.

Until recently, the residents of Melamchi, Nepal, cooked meals and heated water for bathing over a wood-burning stove. The project in Nepal was supported by funds Kiani raised through the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. Kiani traveled in 2018 to Cairns, Australia, for the IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics.
