A software upgrade, retailing for $2,000 to $2,500, will be made available for sale later this month to new and existing conversion kit customers. PICC’s existing conversion kit allows Prius owners to recharge their vehicles in six hours using a regular 120-volt outlet, or in as little as two hours with an optional high-capacity charger.

The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. Ford , Chrysler , Volvo Nissan , Subaru and VW have all indicated they will be bringing plug-in hybrids to the showroom floor for sale within the next few years. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

A chemist and government researcher, Wang raised some $300,000 from relatives, rented about 2,000 square meters of space, and set out to manufacture rechargeable batteries to compete with imports from Sony and Sanyo. Wang Chuan-Fu started BYD (the letters are the initials of the companys Chinese name) in 1995 in Shenzhen, China.
