The concept was a focal point of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Chevrolet will also bring to the market a new lineup of SUVs and performance vehicles. Later this year, GM China will offer the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle. In December 2010, Shanghai GM introduced the Sail battery-electric concept vehicle, which was developed by Shanghai GM and PATAC.

The VELITE 6 is based on the VELITE concept new energy vehicle unveiled in November 2016. Following the earlier introduction of the LaCrosse hybrid electric vehicle and Volt-based VELITE 5 extended-range electric vehicle ( earlier post ), the VELITE 6 will enable Buick to cater to the rapidly growing demand for new energy vehicles.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0"
