In the United States in 2011, the University of Delaware and the New Jersey–based utility NRG Energy signed a. technology-license deal for the first commercial deployment of vehicle-to-grid technology. University of Rochester modeled vehicle-to-grid economics and found battery-degradation costs to be minimal.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 25 cost-share projects under the Clean Cities program that will be funded with nearly $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
