Households with plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and smart meters actively managed how, when and where they charged their cars based on electricity rates but rarely took advantage of online feedback, according to a two-year study by a team at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute ( RASEI ).

The Electrification Coalition released two case studies outlining how two cities— Houston, Texas and Loveland, Colorado —are saving money by using electric vehicles (EVs) in their vehicle fleets. In 2010, the city converted 15 Toyota Prius hybrids to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

From the Wall Street Journal article, Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, chief executive of Circulor, shared that only about 15% of electric-vehicle minerals are extracted or processed in the U.S. This means EVs like the Mustang Mach-E which is assembled in Mexico, and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV) which is assembled in Canada, would qualify.
