Less coal was used to produce heat and electricity but this was offset by higher industrial and transport emissions, the latter increasing for the fourth consecutive year. Energy efficiency and renewable energy will continue to play a key role in cutting future emissions and helping the EU achieve its 40% reduction target by 2030.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) will work together with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) to deploy a Small Modular Reactor (SMR)—the BWRX-300—at the Darlington new nuclear site, the only site in Canada currently licensed for a new nuclear build. Site preparation will begin in the spring of 2022, pending appropriate approvals.
